New Santos F.C Mission Statement

New Santos exists to provide sporting facilities for young people in the greater Belfast area and is run on a voluntary basis. We operate an 'Open Door Policy' in relation to membership regardless of religion, race, disability or gender. We believe it is the responsibility of those in charge to develop the participants involved to the best of their individual abilities by creating a safe environment and receive the best possible coaching. Fair play, mutual understanding and cross community aspects play an important role in the ethos of the club.

We are committed to reviewing our policy and what constitutes good practice at regular intervals.

Club History

New Santos FC was founded in March 1996 in Lavery's Bar, Belfast, by Ronan Doherty and John Paul Byrne. The two had played youth football together ten years earlier and, amid a bout of alcohol fuelled reminiscence, decided to found their own team.  After canvassing interest among prospective players they applied to the Dunmurry League ( Now Belfast and District ) and were accepted into Division 4 for the 1996-1997 season.

The team played their first friendly as New Santos on 14th August 1996 at Strangford Avenue, Malone Road. The opponents were 113th OB and the newcomers ran out comprehensive 6 - 2 winners. The starting team on that day was:

JP Byrne

Garvan Doherty - Mark McLoughlin - Diarmuid Magee - Colin Hodgett

Ronan Doherty -  Colin Wilson - Stephen Donnelly - Johnny Magill

David McGeagh - Brendan McKeown

Subs: Kevin O'Neill and Danny Kennedy

The goals came from Johnny Magill (3), Kevin O'Neill, David McGeagh and Colin Wilson.

Their league debut, on on Sept 7th 1996,  was less successful though, as Santos lost to St. Michaels fielding a team of:

Barry McCooey

Brendan McKeown - Diarmuid Magee - Colin Hodgett - JP Byrne

Ronan Doherty - Colin Wilson - Stephen Donnelly - Hugh Dougal

David McGeagh - Johnny Magill

Subs - Kevin O'Neill, Garvan Doherty, Conor O'Neill, Terry Smith

Santos had to wait until their 4th league outing to gain a point in a 1 - 1 draw with Oliver Plunkett, with Johnny Magill again scoring. Three points followed with a 3 - 1 win over Seahill in the next match and were unbeaten in their next 5 as Santos proved they would compete in their debut season.

Over the next few years New Santos grew as a club but found their league position constantly vulnerable due to several league restructures. In 2002 AC Cosmos folded and several of their players joined New Santos. This injection of fresh blood provided Santos with the impetus to raise their game to the level required to win promotion for the first time in 2002 / 2003, moving to Division 1.

New Santos were finally promoted to the top tier of the Belfast and District League after the 2007 / 2008 campaign and hope to continue to grow as a club.

2nd Team
Due to an ever increasing squad the management decided to enter a reserve team into the bottom division for the 2003/2004 season. Paul Stinton took control of the second team, who suffered the same problems as most reserve sides. Constantly changing personnel and a lack of experience made it hard for the 2nd team to pick up points. The team was very successful in it's primary role as a feeder for the first team, though, with current squad members Eamonn Moran, Simon Magee, Pol Douglas, Kevin Carson, Gareth McKinstry, Connor Chambers, Sean Carson, Michael West and Kieran Seaward all making their debuts in the second team. The team soon folded, however, due to lack of numbers, after gaining promotion in 2005 / 2006.

The second team returned at the beginning of the 2009/10 season in Division 2. After a difficult start to the season, the teams performances and results improved throughout the season culminating with a respectable 12th place finish within the 16 team division.
