New Santos vs Glanville

Following a disappointing draw with Greencastle Rovers II two weeks prior, Santos were looking to get back on track with a tough fixture against the unbeaten Glanville.

It was a typically Irish winters day at Strangford with strong winds making it a hard day to play football. The first 10 minutes were an even affair until Kevin Kerrs long throw was headed in by Anthony McGreevy. McGreevy soon wasted a chance to get his seconds as he mis-hit from 10 yards out and sliced the ball wide. Glanville pressurised the Santos defence with a series of corners but failed to threaten Byrnes goal.

25 minutes in and Santos went two up through an almost identical goal to the first. Again Kerrs long throw was nodded in, this time by Martin Magee. Soon after Santos went 3-0 up when Joe Magees effort from Gareth Cullens corner was deflected in off a Glanville player.

Half-time: New Santos 3-0 Glanville

In the second half Glanville were unable to make as much us of the wind as Santos had in the first a series of goal kicks and defensive clearances going out for Santos goal kicks. Glanvilles Harry McGreevy was their liveliest threat throughout although the Santos defence had stood firm up until the 80th minute when McGreevy squeezed an effort from 18 yards into the bottom left corner to make it 3-1.

The goal set up a nervy finish as Glanville piled forward but to no avail as Santos held out for the win to keep the pressure on at the top of the league table.
