St Lukes vs New Santos
New Santos went into this match with revenge on their mind having felt aggrieved at last weeks 2-1 home defeat by St Lukes.
Santos felt confident at the start of the game with the belief they could overturn the previous weeks defeat and notch their first league points of the season.
Santos went into the break 2 down, but with a definite feeling that they could get something from the game. The pre-match optimism wasn't to be brought onto the pitch in the early stages. It took only around 10 minutes for St Lukes to break the deadlock when an attack was finished off with a perfectly drilled shot into the corner from 25 yards. Santos threatened an equaliser when two Simon Magee efforts were parried away by the St Lukes goalkeeper.
A moment of controversy ensued. After Simon Magee challenged the goalkeeper, a free kick was awarded to St Lukes. However, the goal keeper preceeded to kick the ball at Simon Magee, chase after him and shove him. The St Lukes referee took no action other than having a word with the keeper and Santos felt aggrieved considering David Dougan was sent of the week previous for a similar yet seemingly lesser incident.
Before the break, St Lukes compounded Santos' misery. Two breaks, one down each flank resulted in a couple more neat finishes and Santos went into the break 3-0 down with Simon Magee, the only available striker having to come off injured with a hamstring problem.
Half Time: St Lukes 3-0 New Santos
The second half started with damage limitation in mind for Santos. It wasn't to be however. Despite a few spells of pressure, Santos created little of note with the St Lukes backline proving a formidable force. St Lukes again had the better of the half and notched a fourth after another defensive mixup in the Santos backline. To add insult to injury, St Lukes got a fifth late on when a long ball into the box was headed into his own net by Gareth McKinstrey.
