Clifton Athletic vs New Santos
With the start of the season approaching New Santos faced Division 2 side Clifton Athletic in a friendly at Ormeau Park.
The game started off very evenly on a pitch that made attractive football almost impossible. Santos came close twice early on via efforts from David Harrigan and Stevie Copeland which went narrowly wide while Clifton had a few efforts from long range which failed to trouble JP Byrne. Around 30 minutes in, a loose ball in the Santos box fell to a Clifton attacker but an excellent last ditch from Joe Magee forced a corner to Clifton. From the resultant corner Santos fell behind to a free header at the back post.
Santos had chances to equalise before half time but Paddy O'Reilly's header was too close the keeper while he also blasted over from 18 yards.
Half-time: Clifton Athletic 1-0 New Santos
The second half continued to be an even affair much like the first. Clifton having more of the possession but with Santos creating more chances. Santos missed too guilt edged chances to equalise as Paul Barr headed straight at the keeper from 6 yards out while Kieran Seaward failed to convert from the same distance.
Clifton had an opportunity to go two up after the Clifton ref failed to give a blatant offside however good work from JP Byrne and Joe Magee forced the attacker too wide and his effort hit the side netting.
Player/Manager Ronan Doherty decided to switch to a 3-4-3 formation in search of an equaliser with Anthony McGreevy reverting to his more natural position of striker. The tactically change paid off almost immediately as McGreevys excellent flicked cross back across the box fell to Paddy O'Reilly who finished well with his head.
The game drew to a close with a draw probably being a fair result and the game being a great workout for the both sides.
