New Santos vs Ballyvange
After the previous weeks 2-1 defeat to Immaculata, New Santos were looking to progress to the second round of the Junior Shield but faced a tough task in a Ballyvange team who were carrying a 100% league record into the game.
The first half was a dull affair with Ballyvange missing the only real chance of note after their lone striker shot wide from 12 yards out after 15 minutes. The rest of the half was uneventful with Ballyvange having a slight edge in the possession stakes but in truth neither side had deserved to break the stalemate.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Ballyvange coming close to taking the lead however they were kept out by a combination of JP Byrne and an excellent Paul Barr tackle. After 70 minutes, Santos took the lead with Anthony McGreevy scoring a trademark diving header from a Stevie Copeland cross.
The goal spurred the game into action and Ballyvange changed to a more attacking formation in search of an equaliser. With 10 minutes remaining, Conor Chambers was beaten down the right and the ball was crossed for a Ballyvange striker to convert from 8 yards out to sent the game into extra time.

Following a fruitless first period of extra time, Ballyvange caught Santos on the break at the start of the second as David Dougan was beat by his man who squared the ball to an unmarked Ballyvange striker who converted to make it 2-1. It was perhaps a cruel blow for Santos who went gung-ho in the closing minutes but couldn't muster an equaliser as Ballyvange advanced to the second round.
